Zucker Hall

The second stage of the Bronfman Auditorium renovation project was the construction of the Zucker Hall. The hall was originally supposed to be a rehearsal space for the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, to use when the main stage is occupied by other shows and events. The solution was an underground structure that was added to the compound without affecting the iconic building above. Space was allocated during the construction of the underground parking beneath the public square, between the parking structure and the new auditorium basement. During the early design stage, it was decided to enable this space to be used also as a performance hall, connected to the Bronfman Auditorium creating a combined music and performance complex.
The Zucker Hall was designed as a Black Box theater, which enables a variety of shows, seating arrangements, and stage facilities. The stage is the lowest level floor surface, 15m deep. As a rehearsal hall, at its maximum size, it accommodates the entire Philharmonic Orchestra and a choir, matching the size of the Bronfman Auditorium main stage. The renowned acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, who was responsible for the immense acoustical improvement of the Bronfman Auditorium, was also trusted with the acoustical design of the Zucker hall.
In addition to the fixed audience seats surrounding the stage, the hall was equipped with an automated retractable seating system that enables a swift conversion to a 400 seat frontal performance hall. In this configuration, the hall is at its best for live chamber music performance and other amplified musical performances of any kind.
